Chapter 20
Nick & Ariana
_ “Nick…what are you doing here?”
“Give me what you got.” Nick said with anger in his eyes as he forced himself inside Ariana’s apartment. “Already?” Ariana asked in shock.
“Hurry up.” Nick said annoyed.
Ariana ran to the back room and seconds later walked back into the living room. She saw him pacing the floor.
“You’re getting worse, Nick.”
Nick turned to look at her. “Just give them to me.”
“Nick, you’re only supposed to take half…not the whole thing or more than one.” Ariana said still holding the pills behind her back.
Nick quickly placed his hand around her neck and pushed her up against the wall. “Give me the fucking pills!”
Ariana started to gag for air when she pushed the pills into his chest. Nick let go of her and walked into her kitchen to get a glass of water. Ariana touched her neck as she coughed gasping for air. She then walked into her kitchen and saw Nick taking a pill as he chased it down with water. Nick leaned over her kitchen sink allowing the pill to slide down his throat. Ariana gazed at him.
“Nick…you can’t tell Joanna that you speak to me. I think she will literally kill me if she knew you were here.”
Nick didn’t respond.
Ariana moved closer to Nick. She lightly touched his arm.
Nick quickly snatched his arm away. “You’ve been following Sabrina?”
“Yes.”
“You took those pictures of Sabrina and that guy?”
“Yes.” Ariana paused and reached out for Nick.
Nick quickly moved and walked away. “I gotta go.” Nick said nonchalantly.
Ariana watched him leave out of her door.

Cody & Sabrina
_ “I’ll get it.” Cody said trying to help Sabrina with a bag
of clothes.
They were packing their things together as fast as they could. Sabrina did not want to be there anymore. Her and Cody was going to a hotel and she wasn't changing her decision.
“No, baby, it’s too heavy. I’ll get it.” Sabrina said as she struggled with the large suitcase. “You go make sure you have all of your things okay?”
Cody nodded and ran upstairs.
Sabrina dragged her suitcase outside of the door. She suddenly stopped when she felt a sharp pain in her belly forcing her to cry out in pain. The pain brought her down to her knees. She laid across her suitcase in pain. She groaned and winced as she held her belly in pain.
Cody walked outside and saw his mom lying on the ground on top of her suitcase slightly curled up.
“Mom!” Cody yelled when he saw her. “Mommy what’s wrong?!” Cody asked in a panic and looking worried.
“Cody…call 9-1-1. Go…” Sabrina grimaced.
Cody ran back in the house and grabbed the phone. He came back outside and knelt to the ground beside Sabrina as he watched her wince in pain almost in tears.
“9-1-1 what’s your emergency?”
“My mom…she’s hurt! She’s hurting really bad. Please hurry!” Cody shouted into the phone. “Okay, calm down for me. Tell me what’s wrong with her?” The operator said on the other line. Cody looked at Sabrina as he saw tears fall from her eyes. “Mom what’s wrong?”
Sabrina reached her hand out for him to give her the phone. Cody quickly handed her the phone. “Im pregnant…I think im having a miscarriage….”

Nick's Car
_
Nick continued to drive around as he finally calmed down from
his anger. The pain pill was truly making him calm his nerves.
He stopped off at a local lake in the area. The moon light shined beautifully as he overlooked the calm water.
Nick thought about Sabrina.
Where did he go wrong? He felt so bad for how he reacted to finding out she was cheating on him. The fact that the guy Kevin was smiling in his face considering he had been inside his house doing who knows what with Sabrina. He couldn’t believe Sabrina would do that to him. He now believed that it was a bad idea to have brought her there in Gainesville, when his past pretty much hunts him.
Why can’t people understand that he was happy with Sabrina? She was his ‘one’. She is his ‘one’. But how could he live life knowing that she cheated on him? She spent so much time with another man. Would she do it again in the future? Would she have cheated, if he had moved to Atlanta instead of her moving to Gainesville?
Nick took a deep breath. “Damn…why do I have to love her so much?” Nick asked himself outloud.
------------------------
Kelly and her husband, Derek, were sitting in the movie theater watching a movie. Kelly suddenly jumped when she felt her phone vibrate against her leg. Derek looked at her and chuckled.
“What’s wrong with you?” he whispered as he held her hand.
Kelly giggled. “My phone scared me.” Kelly said grabbing her phone.
She looked at the caller id and didn’t recognize the number. “Hello?” Kelly whispered when she answered the phone.
“Hello?” said a voice on the other end.
“Hold on I can’t hear you.” Kelly whispered into the phone.
“Who is that?” Derek asked.
“I don’t know, I’ll be right back.” Kelly whispered back to him.
She quickly excused herself from the aisle she sat and exited out of the theater room. Once she got into the hallway she brought the phone back up to her ear.
“Hello?”
“Aunt Kelly?”
“Cody?”
“It’s me, Cody.”
“Cody, sweetie, where are you? Are you okay?” Kelly asked with concern.
“Aunt Kelly…my mom is in the hospital. I think something is wrong with the baby.”
Kelly’s eyes went wide in panic. “What?! Where are you?”
“At Gainesville Hospital Emergency Room.” Cody answered.
“Where’s Nick?”
“I don’t know. Im by myself. Im out here by myself sitting by a nurse because my mom is in the back with the doctors. Can you please come? Im a little scared.”
“Baby, Im on my way…okay? Im on my way. I will call you right back.” Kelly said as she ran back into the theater to get Derek.
Derek saw Kelly running back up the stadium steps towards him. Derek sat up, “What’s wrong?” “Let’s go! Sabrina is in the hospital.”
Derek hopped up and followed Kelly outside of the theater.
“Babe, what happened?”
“I don’t know! Cody just called me and he said he thinks something is wrong with the baby. We need to hurry. Oh my God…I hope she didn’t have a miscarriage.”
“We need to hurry and get a flight.” Derek said as he rushed trying to keep up with Kelly.
“Get a flight? Derek, we don’t have time. Cody is alone and scared, we need to go now! Give me the keys!”
“No way, you’re too hysterical. I’ll drive.”
“Well hurry up, Derek!” Kelly shouted at him.

--------------
_ Nick finally pulled up into the driveway not sure what
Sabrina was going to be doing. He hated that he had yelled at Cody. Nick knew he
screwed up big time.
Nick saw Sarbina’s car still in the driveway. However, when he pulled up, something felt different. He walked passed Sabrina’s car and saw there were some luggage in the back seat of her car.
He walked up to the door realizing the door was unlocked. He saw a large suitcase on the floor in the kitchen. Nick saw Cody’s bag near the door as well.
Nick walked into their bedroom. He saw the hole in the wall of which he had punched. He looked at the open closet and saw most of Sabrina’s clothes were gone. He walked upstairs toward Cody’s room. No one was in there. He looked at Cody’s closet and saw his clothes were missing. Nick frowned wondering where they were.
“Sabrina! Cody!” Nick yelled loudly.
Nick walked into Josslyn’s room and her room was still the same. He walked into the extra bedroom that was going to be the nursery and the room was empty.
“Sabrina!” Nick called out once again.
No response. The house was quiet.
He began looking in the bathrooms and ran back down stairs and looked into the living room. “Cody! Sabrina!” Nick started to panic.
Where were they? Their things were all packed and her car was outside. Nick rushed outside and ran around the house looking for them. He rushed back inside now worried. Nick took out his cell phone and dialed Sabrina’s phone. Nick could hear her phone ring coming from the bedroom. Nick walked into their bedroom and found her phone in the closet. Nick mumbled a curse. Nick walked back into the kitchen not sure what to do or who to call. The flashing light on the answering machine caught his eye. He pressed play.
“Uhh…yeah, this is Officer Winslow, this message is for Nicholas Lancaster. There’s been an emergency. Your wife and stepson are at the Gainesville hospital emergency room. You may want to get here at your earliest…” the voice trailed off.
Nick didn’t bother to hear the rest of the message. When he heard where they were, Nick dashed out of the house, hopped into his car, and sped down the road as fast as he could.

Part 2
Gainesville Hospital
_ Nick rushed into the hospital emergency room. “Im looking
for Sabrina Lancaster. She’s pregnant and she was rushed here not long ago. Im
her husband, Nicholas Lancaster.” Nick spoke nervously to the woman behind the
glass window.
The woman only looked down on her paper and onto her computer. “She’s now on the labor and delivery floor.” The woman then told Nick how to get there from the emergency room. Nick rushed to the elevators and hit the 5th floor button.
As soon as the elevator doors open, Nick jogged down the corridor to the closest nurses desk. He asked for Sabrina and they ended up telling him to go the opposite side of the floor.
Nick quickly ran down the corridor once again. As Nick passed a waiting room he briefly looked inside and noticed a familiar face. It was Cody. Nick stopped and rushed into the waiting room.
“Cody!”
Cody was sitting next to a woman who wore a hospital badge. Cody only looked up at Nick not excited to see him.
“Cody, are you okay?”
“Where were you?” Cody asked flatly.
“Im sorry…” Nick said trying to hug Cody.
Cody moved away and glared at Nick.
The woman noticed Cody’s gesture. “Uhm, Cody…do you know this man?”
“That’s my mom’s husband.” Cody responded coldly.
Nick was so hurt by Cody’s actions…but he understood. Cody did see Nick show his aggression toward his mother.
“Cody…I am so sorry…” Nick said slowly as he looked at Cody with sincerity.
“Cody Cain?” said another nurse stepping into the waiting room.
The woman who was with Cody stood up saying, “He’s right here.”
Cody brought his attention to the nurse at the doorway. “C’mon sweetie. Your mother is asking for you.” The nurse said holding out her hand for Cody to take.
Cody walked toward the nurse ignoring Nick.
Nick stood up and spoke to the nurse. “Hi, Im his stepdad…Sabrina Lancaster is my wife. Where is she? Is she okay? Is the baby okay?”
“I was told her son was here alone.” The nurse responded suspiciously.
“Besides…she’s asking for me…not you.” Cody said as he looked up at Nick with a frown.
“I need to see her.” Nick said to the nurse ignoring Cody.
“No! He can’t go back there. Please don’t allow him to go back there.” Cody pleaded with the nurse as he squeezed her hand.
“Cody…” Nick started speak.
“Well…sir, if you can just wait here…let me go make some clarifications first before allowing you to go back. Okay? Just wait here.” The nurse said interrupting Nick.
She held on to Cody’s hand and escorted him to where Sabrina was. Cody gave Nick one last glare as he looked up at him and walked with the nurse.
“Can you just tell me if the baby is okay?” Nick said as the nurse walked away.
“Just wait here, sir.” The nurse said as she kept walking with Cody.
Nick felt defeated. He felt so bad as tears began to well up in his eyes. He turned and took a seat in the corner as he held his head down and rested his elbows on his knees as he leaned forward.
The nurse walked into Sabrina’s room saying, “Heyyyy….look who I got?”
Sabrina turned her head and saw Cody’s little worried expression on his face.
Sabrina smiled. “Hey baby…come here!”
Cody walked up to her with a concerned expression. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah…are you okay?” Sabrina asked in a weak voice reaching for his hand.
Cody nodded his head yes. “Aunt Kelly is on her way.”
“Okay.” Sabrina nodded.
“Is my baby brother going to be okay?”
“Let’s hope so.” Sarbina grimaced feeling some pain.
“Mrs. Lancaster…there’s a man outside claiming he’s your husband. He really wants to see you. Do you want him to come in?” The nurse asked.
“No…mom…don’t let him.” Cody insisted.
Sabrina rubbed her belly. “I can’t…not right now.” Sabrina said slowly to the nurse.
“Do you want me to give him the update about you and the baby?” the nurse asked with concern.
“Just tell him that we’re both fine. Thank you.” Sabrina responded as she held Cody's hand.
The nurse smiled saying okay and left the room.
“I don’t want you with Nick anymore, mom. I thought he was a good guy, but he hurt you.”
Sabrina lightly placed her hand on the top of his head and ran her fingers thru his short hair. “Cody…don’t worry, okay? It’s going to be okay.”
Meanwhile, the nurse filled Nick in on the wellness of Sabrina and the baby.
“She’s okay, and the baby is okay…for now. She’s going to have to be bedridden for a while. The doctor wants her to stay here so we can keep an eye on her.”
“Ok…well, what happened?” Nick asked curiously.
“I can’t discuss that with you sir…patient’s request.”
“But that’s my wife!”
“Sir, I understand that. If you want to know more information, you will need to wait and speak to the doctor.”
Nick sighed in frustration. “Can I please go see her?”
“Im sorry. She doesn’t want to see you right now.”
“You can’t keep me from seeing her!” Nick said raising his voice louder and starting to walk forward.
“Sir! Please…don’t make me call security…” The nurse said firmly as she blocked Nick from walking any further.
Nick gave her a disappointed look. He dropped his head low and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Im sorry.” The nurse said feeling bad for Nick. She then walked away.
Nick sat back down in the waiting room leaning forward with his elbows propped on his knees. His face was expressionless as he stared straight ahead in deep thoughts allowing a few tears to roll down his face. His emotions were all over the place.
Hours later, Kelly and Derek were rushing thru the hospital trying to get to Sabrina’s room. “Ma’am! Sir! Im sorry but visiting hours are over.” a nurse called out to them.
“I just came from Atlanta…Im seeing my niece.” Kelly said coldly as she kept walking.
“Ma’am!” The nurse called after her.
“Whoa, whoa…” Derek said to the nurse blocking her from stopping Kelly. “Why don’t we just talk about this visiting thing, shall we?”
“But…?” the nurse attempted to protest.
Kelly walked into Sabrina’s room. She immediately began to tear up.
“Brin…” she then saw Cody sprawled out sleep in a plush chair.
Sabrina slowly opened her eyes and saw her aunt Kelly. She immediately started to cry with joy that her aunt was there. “Aunt Kelly.” Sabrina called to her reaching her arms out for a hug.
Kelly welcomed her embrace as she allowed a few tears to escape down her cheeks. “My baby…are you okay?”
“I didn’t know if I was going to make it. I was in so much pain.” Sarbina stated in a tired voice.
“Is the baby okay?”
“For now.”
Cody slowly woke up and immediately jumped up with excitement when he saw Kelly. He smiled from ear to ear and ran to her wrapping his arms around her waist.
“I miss you, I miss you, I miss you!”
“Oh, my Cody…I miss you too, sweetie!” Kelly hugged him tightly. “Brin…how did all of this happen?”
Before Sabrina could respond, they heard Cody shout out Derek’s name with excitement. “Derek!” He ran to him and wrapped his arms around Derek’s torso.
“Hey Code-meister!” Derek embraced Cody.
Sabrina smiled to see Derek there as well. Derek walked up to Sabrina as he stood next to Kelly. He leaned down to hug her.
“Im so glad you guys are here…you have no idea.”
“What happened?” Derek asked Sabrina.
“Nick –“
“Cody…” Sabrina said interrupting Cody not wanting him to tell what happened.
“Yeah..where is Nick?” Kelly asked curiously.
“Last I know he was out in the waiting—“
“Cody…please.” Sabrina said interrupting Cody once again.
“What’s going on, Brin?” Kelly asked suspiciously.
Sabrina sighed. “Nick and I got into an argument and when he left, I started having all of these pains.”
“So where is he now?” Derek asked with concern.
“I don’t know…I don’t really care, right now.”
Kelly and Derek exchanged glances.
“Brin…does he know you’re here?” Kelly asked furrowing her brows.
Sabrina nodded her head yes.
“Well…what was the argument about? He should be here with you. Cody shouldn’t have been alone.” Kelly said a little upset.
Derek noticed her getting a little upset and wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
“Nick punched a hole in the wall…” Cody softly blurted out.
Sabrina looked at Cody and narrowed her eyes at him. She didn’t want Cody to mention that to anyone.
“Cody…”
“He what? When? Why? Did he hit you?” Kelly asked with alarm.
“No, he didn’t hit me. He was just … really angry, and he punched a hole in the wall. It’s not really a big deal.”
Kelly figured Sabrina didn’t want to talk about it. Kelly sighed and looked up at Derek.
“We should probably get a hotel or something.”
“And buy toothbrushes, something to bathe with and underwear…” Derek added with slight sarcasm.
Sabrina frowned. “Did you guys forget your bags or something?"
“No, we just hit the road as soon as Cody called.” Derek said with a smirk as he looked at Kelly.
“I had to be here.” Kelly smiled and playfully elbowed Derek in the ribs.
Sabrina laughed lightly. She then said, “Im sorry you guys had to come so far to get here…”
“Oh hush, Brin. That’s nonsense.” Kelly said waving Sabrina off.
“Yeah, I think the medication they have you on must be making you say some crazy things.” Derek added with a smile as he patted Sabrina's leg thru the blanket she laid under.
Everyone chuckled and soon after, an awkward silence filled the room. Kelly looked up at Derek as if she wanted him to leave so her and Sabrina could talk. Derek got the message by reading her eyes. Derek then looked over at Cody who rested his head on Sabrina’s lap.
“Hey Cody…why don’t you come with me and find a hotel your aunt Kelly and I can stay in.”
Cody raised his head and tiredly agreed.
“We should probably get his clothes and things too, right?” Derek asked looking at Sabrina.
“We already packed our things.” Cody volunteered the information in a tired voice.
“Cody! Geez…” Sabrina said annoyed he was giving them so much information.
“Okay…Why don’t we have Derek go over there and get your things, okay?” Kelly said patting Derek on the arm.
“Yeah sure, I don’t have a problem with that. I hope Nick is there.” Derek said with concern.
“No…I don’t want to see him.” Cody said as he stood closely to Derek.
Kelly and Derek exchanged glances once again. They both couldn’t wait to get to the bottom of what happened between the family. Derek wrapped his arm around Cody.
“Don’t worry Code-meister…Im here…nothing will happen, okay?”
Cody nodded his head 'okay' as he looked down.
“Cody, come give me a hug before you go.” Sabrina said to him as she reached her hands out for him.

_
Nick was sitting on the sofa when he had dozed off to sleep
with the television on. He was still fully clothed from when he had left the hospital.
The sound of the doorbell jolted him awake. Nick looked at the time and saw that it was almost 3:30am. He hopped up and walked toward the front door. He opened the door to see Derek and Cody standing by his side.
“Derek!” Nick said in shock.
He opened the door wider for the two to walk in with ease. Nick gave Derek a dap handshake and a shoulder to shoulder hug. Nick looked down at Cody and he could tell Cody was not happy to be there.
“Hey, Cody.” Nick said to him.
Cody didn’t respond.
“We, came by to get Cody and Brin’s clothes.” Derek said as he looked around.
It was his first time being there and seeing the house Nick and Sabrina lived in.
Nick rubbed the back of his neck feeling sad. “Yeah…okay, sure…” Nick started to walk toward the kitchen where both Cody and Sabrina’s things were still packed in their luggage.
“Better yet,” Derek said forcing Nick to stop in his tracks. “…Cody, why don’t you get your bag and make sure you have everything packed. I want to talk to Nick alone for a second.” Derek finished as he lightly wrapped his hand around the back of Cody’s neck.
“Alright.” Cody said softly and walked toward the kitchen.
Nick took a deep breath as he watched Cody walk away. He then slowly brought his eyes back to Derek and noticed he was still looking around. Nick was feeling slightly intimidated. He always liked Derek. In fact, he looked up to him. Nick always wanted what Derek and Kelly had in their relationship. And now, Derek stood in his house with a serious expression and tone. He didn’t know what Derek knew about his and Sabrina’s situation. But he knew he would soon figure it out.
Derek finally spoke. “So…where’s the hole that you punched into the wall?”
Nick cleared his throat. “The bedroom.” Nick said shamefully.
-----------------------
Kelly allowed the nurse to tend to Sabrina as she took her vital signs. Kelly took a seat on the other side of Sabrina’s bed and made herself comfortable. Once the nurse finally left the room, Kelly looked at her niece who appeared to be very tired.
“Brin, I know you're tired, but I really want to know what happened…but if you want to go to sleep, I totally understand.” Kelly said and then yawned herself.
Sabrina scratched her head thinking about everything that had happened between her and Nick. She wondered, where should she start.
---------------------
Nick and Derek took a seat in the living room.
“Alright…” Derek said, “Im listening…what the hell is going on between you two?”
----------------------
“Aunt Kelly…Nick has a problem. He obviously has an anger management problem that I never knew about. And…I don’t know if him taking drugs has a lot to do with it or that’s just the person he became.”
----------------------
Nick took a deep breath. “I freaked out…that’s what happened.” Nick said looking down at his hands. “I found out that she…" Nick paused as if hating to say the words come out of his mouth. He continued, " .... I found out that she was cheating on me.”
Derek’s eyes went wide with shock. “You’re kidding me, right?”
Nick looked up at Derek. “No…im not. I have the pictures to prove it. She’s kissing on this guy she works with. She’s been spending a lot of time with this guy while I was at work. I mean…she’s pregnant with my child…how could she do that to me?”
------------------------
“I had never been so scared in my life. The rage in his eyes…the way he punched the hole in the wall. I know he was upset at me about something…but it was really extreme. I was scared, aunt Kelly.”
“Well…what sparked him off? Why was he so upset in the first place?” Kelly asked curiously.
Sabrina sighed. “He found out that I had been spending a lot of time with another guy.”
Kelly looked disappointed at Sabrina. She couldn’t believe her niece.
------------------------
“Nick…I understand your anger…I do. I can only imagine. But punching a hole in the wall? Scaring Cody to the point where he doesn’t even want to be around you? You almost hit, Brin…what were you thinking? Why didn’t you just walk away?” Derek asked with concern.
Nick hesitated. “I…was pissed off about Brin taking something from me…”
“Taking what?”
“My pills.”
-----------------------
“Brin, how could you…why?”
“I don’t know! I was just upset with Nick. He wasn’t there for me…he was always working and when he came home, he just wanted sex. I wanted someone to be there for me. Someone to make me feel special and take me places…I just wanted someone who…who didn’t have baggage or the drama surrounding him at every corner.”
-------------------------
“You’re on drugs?” Derek asked as he furrowed his brows at Nick.
“It started back when I was playing football in college. I had got a concussion and ever since then I’ve been hooked on these pain pills. They relax me. They calm me. I didn’t think it was a problem. It was just a quick fix for me. It helped with my headaches and it calmed me. When I get pissed about something, I'd take a pill and Im good. I work thru the issue without spazzing out.” Nick paused. “Derek…I know…I fucked up.”
--------------------------
“Brin, honey … you were wrong. You know that right?”
“I know.” Sabrina said feeling guilty.
“You and Nick need to talk. I don’t like that Nick is on these…drugs. He needs help…bad. Because, I’ll be damned if he ever lays a hand on you, Brin.” Kelly warned her niece.
“I know.”
“You both have some issues that need to be handled before this baby comes into this world.”
“I know… I was working on that.”
“What do you mean?”
“I was going to leave Nick. I don’t know what he’s capable of, and I don’t want to put Cody or my life in danger…nor this baby.”
“You should have done that before spending so much time with this other man.”
“I know.”
--------------------------
“You and Brin need to talk, Nick.”
“I know. That’s what I’ve been trying to do.”
“How do you feel about her stepping out on you with another guy? Is it something you think you can get over?”
“I don’t know.” Nick hesitated in deep thoughts. “I just feel like I have put so much into trying to make this relationship work..but it’s obvious…she just doesn’t want to be with me. I can’t keep chasing after her like an idiot when she doesn’t want to be caught.”
“You need to tell her how you feel. But you really need to seek help for your drug problem, man. And quick. You should probably handle that first. That way she will see that you’re trying to change. Just do it for yourself.”
“Yeah….you’re right.”
“Why don’t we do this…if you don’t mind, I think Cody should sleep in his own bed tonight. I’ll sleep on the couch. In the morning…we take Cody to school and take Brin’s things up to the hospital. I’ll get out of your hair tomorrow and look for a hotel to stay. Knowing my wife, we’ll be here in town for a long time.” Derek stated with a faint smile.
Nick lightly chuckled and agreed.
The sound of the doorbell jolted him awake. Nick looked at the time and saw that it was almost 3:30am. He hopped up and walked toward the front door. He opened the door to see Derek and Cody standing by his side.

Chapter 21
Nurse Jackie
_ “Good morning!” the nurse said loudly waking both Sabrina
and Kelly out of their sleep.
Kelly slowly sat up in the plush chair that sat beside Sabrina’s hospital bed. Sabrina slowly opened her eyes feeling slightly nauseous.
The nurse faintly smiled as she brought in a machine to take Sabrina’s vitals and holding her clip board against her chest.
“How are we feeling this morning?”
Sabrina parted her dry lips and furrowed her brows a bit. “Im not feeling too good right now.”
“No?” the nurse asked shocked.
Kelly stretched and asked, “When will the doctor be in to see her?”
“Funny you should ask. Dr. Addison just told us that she would be in shortly to check on her. Im going to fix your IV for you Sabrina…you’re still a little dehydrated.” The nurse said as she moved about.
Kelly stood up and moved to give the nurse some room to be able to tend to Sabrina freely.
“Im nurse Jackie, by the way. I’ll be your nurse for the day today. Did the nurses treat you well last night?”
Sabrina slowly nodded.
“Excellent. I’ll make sure to do even better for you today.” Nurse Jackie responded with a smile as she prepared to take Sabrina’s vital signs. “Have you been feeling the baby move around?” Sabrina winced slightly feeling some discomfort. “He’s been kicking me all night.” Sabrina said as she licked her dry lips. “I’m so thirsty.” Sabrina told the nurse.
“No problem, I will get you more ice water for you.”
“Thanks.”
Meanwhile, Kelly was in the corner of the room calling her husband Derek.
“Hey babe.” Derek answered his cell phone.
“Hey honey, where are you?” Kelly asked as she tucked her hair behind her ear.
“I just stepped out of the shower. We took Cody to school this morning...he was late...but he got there.”
“Oh okay. When are you going to bring Brin’s things up here?”
“As soon as I get dressed.”
“Did you talk to Nick?” Kelly asked while whispering Nick’s name.
“Yeah. I’ll tell you about it later.”
Kelly looked back at the nurse still tending to Sabrina. “Okay. Well…see you soon. I love you.” “Love you too, babe. See you in a bit.” Derek stated and ended the call.
“Okay…I’ll be right back with your ice water.” Nurse Jackie informed Sabrina.
Kelly walked up to Sabrina’s bed side and took a seat back in the chair she slept in.
“Can you believe that its already after 10 am in the morning?”
Sabrina’s eyes went wide in shock. “Oh no, aunt Kelly did you call my job and tell them I couldn’t make it to work?”
“Yes, don’t worry. Remember, I called and left a message on both Heather and that guy Richard’s voice mail last night.”
Sabrina raised her hand up to her forehead with relief. “Oh good…thank you.”
At that moment, nurse Jackie walked back into the room and gave Sabrina a large cup of ice water. “Here you go, sweetie. The doctor is on her way in right now.”
Sabrina nodded and said thank you.

Sabrina nodded and said thank you.
Dr. Addison
_ A few minutes pass and Dr. Addison and nurse Jackie, walked
back into Sabrina’s room.
“Heyyy…how are we feeling this morning? Are we still holding on to our baby boy?” Dr. Addison said as she walked in with a smile.
Sabrina and Kelly both smiled to see her so chipper that morning.
“Im holding on to him, but Im not feeling too hot this morning.”
Dr. Addison’s smile slowly faded to hear the news Sabrina just told her. She began examining Sabrina by placing her hand on her belly. Dr. Addison looked up at Kelly.
“And you are…her sister?”
Kelly smiled and blushed a little. “Oh no, this is my niece.”
“Oh okay, I knew there was a family resemblance. Nice to meet you.” Dr. Addison responded with a light smile. She then looked back down at Sabrina and asked, “Any headaches?”
“A little.” Sabrina responded weakly.
Dr. Addison turned to nurse Jackie and asked a few questions that allowed her to look down at Sabrina’s medical charts.
“Dr. Addison, what exactly happened last night with Sabrina?” Kelly curiously asked.
“Well, Sabrina has preeclampsia. Which means having high blood pressure or excess protein in the urine. Her blood pressure sky rocketed last night. Bringing a lot of stress on the baby. It causes some pain in the abdomen, and I think that just caught Sabrina off guard. Usually, the only cure of preeclampsia is delivery. However, we want to avoid putting Sabrina or the baby at risk for serious complications since she is early in her pregnancy. We don’t want to bring her baby boy out into this world just yet.”
“Well what kind of complications are we talking about?” Kelly asked with a concerned expression as she rested her hand on Sabrina’s shoulder.
“Lack of blood flow to the placenta. If not enough blood to the placenta, the baby may receive less oxygen and nutrients. This can slow the baby’s growth, birth weight, and breathing difficulties for your baby. There could also be placental abruption. If there is severe abruption, it can cause heavy bleeding and damage to the placenta, which…can be life-threatening for both Sabrina and the baby.”
“Oh my God.” Kelly whispered in disbelief.
Sabrina grabbed a hold of Kelly’s hand and tightly squeezed it at hearing the news.
“Don’t worry…that’s why we are going to keep you here and keep things monitored to make sure you and your baby will be fine.” Dr. Addison reassured Sabrina with a light smile. She then asked, “You said this is your first pregnancy with this baby’s father, correct, Sabrina?”
“Yes.” Sabrina answered softly.
“And you said you have a small headache as well, right?”
“Yes.”
“Any pain in your upper abdomen that may be unrelated to the baby’s movement?”
“Not right now.”
“Okay.” Dr. Addison responded as she wrote a few things down. “Okay, we’ll give you something for your headaches and if you feel any more pains in your abdomen. Other than that, do you have any questions for me?”
Both Kelly and Sabrina responded no.
“Good. We’ll probably run more tests to make sure the baby is okay…” Dr. Addison spoke mainly to nurse Jackie but out loud for everyone to hear. She then turned her attention to Sabrina and Kelly saying, “…okay. Just hang tight, and I’ll be checking on you, okay?”
“Thank you Dr. Addison.” Sabrina and Kelly both said.
“No problem…I’ll be in touch.”
At that, Dr. Addison left the hospital room with nurse Jackie close behind.
Kelly looked down at Sabrina and rubbed her forehead and into her hair. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Im just scared. Im so glad you’re here with me, aunt Kelly. I don't know what I would do.”
“I wouldn’t be anywhere else, sweetie.” Kelly said and leaned down to kiss her forehead.
Moments later there was a knock at her door. Kelly looked up hoping to see Derek and Cody, but instead she saw someone else. An unfamiliar face to Kelly, however, it was a familiar face to Sabrina.
“Kevin! Oh my gosh, what are you doing here?” Kelly heard Sabrina say in shock.
The man whose name was Kevin walked into the room.
“Hellloooo….what’s going on in here?” Kevin said with a broad smile on his face showing his dimples.
“Kevin…how did you know I was here?” Sabrina said with a smile on her face.
“Word spreads around ya know. When I went to your office for our break, you weren’t there. So…Ariana filled me in. And well…here I am.” Kevin continued to smile as he now approached her bed side and leaned down to give her a hug.
Sabrina welcomed his hug and quickly pushed him away when she noticed the disturbed look on her aunt’s face. “Uh…Kevin…this is my aunt, Kelly. Kelly…this is Kevin. I work with him.” Sabrina said giving her aunt a certain expression as if to say he was the man she had been spending a lot of her time with.
“Heyyy…how are we feeling this morning? Are we still holding on to our baby boy?” Dr. Addison said as she walked in with a smile.
Sabrina and Kelly both smiled to see her so chipper that morning.

Kevin Henderson
_Kevin smiled as he greeted Kelly. “I see that beauty definitely runs in
the family. Nice to meet you.”
Kelly faintly smiled saying thank you as she greeted him.
“Thanks for coming by, Kevin. That’s really sweet.” Sabrina lightly smiled. “Yeah, that’s nice and all, but she needs her rest now. Thanks for coming by.” Kelly said as if rushing him out of the room.
“Oh…Im sorry, did I come at the wrong time?”
Both Kelly and Sabrina answered at the same time.
“Yes.” Was Kelly’s answer.
“No.” was Sabrina’s answer.
Kevin only smiled.
“No, Kevin…really it’s okay. I mean…you came all of this way just to see me.” Sabrina said as she sat up in her bed.
Kelly gave an annoyed look to Sabrina as she fluffed her pillows for her to sit up in her bed.
“What did you tell the job in order for you to come all this way?” Sabrina asked Kevin.
Kevin smiled. “I said it was a family emergency.”
“Family?” Kelly stated with suspicion.
Kevin chuckled. “Yeah. I don’t know what all Sabrina has told you, but we’re pretty close. You know, our friendship. So, she may as well be my family.”
“Right.” Kelly responded flatly.
Sabrina tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled shamelessly at both Kevin and Kelly. Sabrina could tell that Kelly didn’t think he should be there, but she wished she wouldn’t be so rude about it.
“So how are you doing? Is the baby okay?” Kevin asked.
“Yeah, Im fine. The baby is fine. They just want to monitor me for a few days to make sure everything goes well.”
“That’s good…” Kevin responded as his voice trailed off.
There was another knock at the door. Kelly looked up to see Derek come thru the door, with Nick close behind him. Kelly noticed that Sabrina didn’t hear the door knock or see Derek and Nick walk into the room. She was too busy talking with Kevin.
“Hey babe…” Derek said keeping his eyes on Kelly.
Kelly noticed Nick’s eyes went from her and straight over at the man standing at Sabrina’s bed side. Nick furrowed his brow as if recognizing the man.
Kelly quickly walked up to Nick not wanting him to lose his cool. “Hey! Why don’t you just come –“ “Kevin?” Nick said out loud in disbelief.
Both Sabrina and Kevin turned their attention over toward the doorway to see Nick.
“Nick!” Sabrina said stunned to see him walk into her room.
Kevin smiled. "Hey, buddy, how’s it going?”
Nick clenched his jaw muscles as he glared at Sabrina and Kevin. Kelly gently grabbed Nick’s arm trying to push him out of the room.
“Nick, why don’t you—“
“You got some fucking balls to show your face around here you—“ Nick interrupted Kelly in anger as he charged up to Kevin.
“No,Nick! Stop!” Sabrina yelled.
“Derek!” Kelly yelled to her husband wanting him to grab Nick.
Just when Nick drew his fist back to punch Kevin, Derek had ran up to Nick and stopped him. “Hey! Relax! Nick, relax!” Derek shouted at Nick as he pulled him away holding his arms behind his back.
“That’s the asshole that was in my house, Derek! That’s him!” Nick said loudly in anger struggling to get out of Derek's tight grip.
Sabrina buried her face into her hands as her emotions ran high.
Kevin only held his hands up in defense, looking innocent as if he had no idea what was going on.
“Alright, relax. Let’s go outside…relax.” Derek said pushing Nick out of Sabrina’s room.
Kelly looked at Kevin in anger. “You really should not have come here.”
“Im sorry…I didn’t know –“ Kevin started.
“Of course you knew…she’s a married woman. You need to leave.” Kelly said firmly as she glared at Kevin.
Kevin looked at Sabrina who appeared to be embarrassed with tears in her eyes. “Do you want me to leave?” Kevin asked Sabrina.
“Look, asshole, she’s an emotional wreck. I don’t care what she says, you are not staying here to stress her out! Now leave!” Kelly demanded to Kevin with a frown on her face.
“Is there a problem in here? Do I need to call security?” asked nurse Jackie as she burst thru the door.
Sabrina looked up at everyone and turned her attention to Kevin. “Please…just go.” Sabrina said softly.
“Okay. I’ll call you.” Kevin said giving Sabrina one last look. He then turned to leave the room.
“Are you okay?” Nurse Jackie asked once again.
Sabrina tucked her hair behind both of her ears. “Yes. Im fine. Thank you.”
Nurse Jackie looked at Kelly. Kelly took a deep breath and held her forehead as if she had a headache.
“Yes…thank you nurse Jackie. Everything is fine.” Kelly responded calmly.
Nurse Jackie gave everyone one last glance before slowly leaving the room.
Kelly turned to look at Sabrina. “Brin, what the hell? Why did you allow that man to stay in here?” “Aunt Kelly he is just a friend! Why can’t everyone believe that? I don’t have anyone else here who cares about me, but him! Why can’t he be here?” Sabrina argued.
“Sabrina you cheated on your husband with that man! You emotionally cheated on him as well as physically.”
“Kissing?! Kissing is not cheating!”
Kelly abruptly stopped before speaking and placed her hands on her hips feeling disappointed in her niece. She took another deep breath.
“Im not going there with you, Brin. We are both just going to calm down, okay? Drink your water. I’ll be back.”
“Where are you going?” Sabrina pouted.
“To check on our husbands.” Kelly stated coldly as she walked out of the room.
Kelly quickly walked down the hall searching for Derek and Nick. When she turned the corner she saw Derek consoling Nick as they walked.
“Is everything okay?” Kelly asked both Derek and Nick.
Nick looked up at Kelly with apologetic eyes. “Im sorry, Kelly. I really am. I didn’t mean to just snap…but that is the man who has been inside of my house doing only God knows what with my wife.”
“I know…I understand, but you can’t blow up like that Nick. Sabrina is not well. Sabrina is now considered a high risk pregnancy. Do not upset her.”
“Why was that dude here, Kel?” Derek asked Kelly slightly upset about the situation.
“Brin says they’re just friends.” Kelly said shrugging her shoulders and slapping her hands down at the side of her thighs.
Nick rolled his eyes with annoyance and placed both hands, intertwining his fingers together, at the crown of his head. “I just want to talk to her.” Nick said calmly.
“I don’t know if now is a good time, Nick.” Kelly said with uncertainty.
“Why not? They are going to have to talk at some point, right?” Derek said with concern.
Kelly placed her hands on her hips as she stared at Derek.
Derek looked at Nick. “Listen…if you want to talk to her, do it like you have some damn sense, you got it?”
“Maybe we should be in the room with them…” Kelly suggested.
“No. We can just be outside of the room. Because we know Nick is not going to lose his cool again…right, Nick?” Derek stared intently at Nick waiting for him to respond with reassurance.
Nick shoved his hands into his jean pockets.
“Right.” Nick said with a glum expression. He then looked at Kelly. “I swear…Kelly. I just need to know where Sabrina and I stand. I won’t lose my cool with her. I love her and my baby that she is carrying, and I don’t want anything to happen to them.”
Kelly looked up into Nick’s eyes and saw the sincerity. She sighed and looked up at Derek. Derek gave her a reassuring look.
“Alright. Fine. But, Nick…I swear…if anything happens while you’re in there…you will feel the wrath of me, do you understand me?”
“Yes.” Nick quickly responded.
Kelly walked off heading back toward Sabrina’s room. When Kelly reached Sabrina’s door and was about to walk in, she felt Derek gently grab her arm pulling her to the side. Kelly looked at Derek as if he were crazy.
“What are you doing?” she asked him quietly.
“Babe, just let him go in alone.” Derek spoke quietly to her.
Kelly huffed as she folded her arms across her chest and leaned against the wall outside of Sabrina’s room.

Nick & Sabrina Lancaster
_ Nick walked into the room slowly. He saw Sabrina lying there
looking out the window as if she were in deep thoughts. She turned to look toward the door when she heard someone come in. Sabrina rolled her eyes at the
sight of Nick coming into the room.
“Just go away, Nick.” Sabrina said with frustration.
“Look, Brin…it has become very clear to me, that you rather have this guy Kevin around, more than me…” Nick paused as he stepped further into the room. “…but I guess…I need to hear you say that…” Nick said softly as he kept his hands in his pockets.
Sabrina sighed. “Nick…you’re on drugs, and you’re violent. How do I know that when you get angry again, it won’t be the wall you’re punching but instead it will be my face! I can’t live in fear like that.”
“I won’t hit you. I will never hit you.” Nick said calmly wanting her to believe him.
“Look what you did just a second ago, Nick! You can’t just haul off and try to fight someone.”
“That man….” Nick started to raise his voice out of frustration. He stopped to recompose himself. He spoke softly, “Sabrina…that man disrespected me by spending all of his time with you…my wife. He was in my house…alone…with you…my wife. How do you think that makes me feel?” “Nick, he’s just a friend.”
“A friend you kissed over and over again, Brin! How would you feel if I did that with Joanna?” “That’s totally different!” Sabrina argued.
“What about if I did that with Heather? Or Ariana?”
“That’s different, Nick!”
“HOW?!” Nick raised his voice and quickly regretted doing so.
He rubbed his face feeling severely frustrated with Sabrina. He then folded his arms and stared at Sabrina. Sabrina avoided his eye contact. She took a sip of her ice water.
“Do you even want to be with me anymore?” Nick asked feeling his heart was being beaten down. Sabrina sighed and lowered her head down. “Nick…don’t ask me crazy questions like that.”
“It’s a simple yes or no question.”
Sabrina raised her head to look up at him. “Nick, do you understand how Im feeling right now? With all of the drama that surrounds you with Joanna and these other females…I just feel like you are the reason I am even here in this hospital. When I was pregnant with Cody, I didn’t have any complications. I was alone, and everything was okay. Now…Im having to stay here because of preeclampsia that can be life-threatening. Im scared, Nick. I just want my baby healthy.” Sabrina said as tears welled up into her eyes.
“So do I, Brin…” Nick said as his voice slightly trembled.
Sabrina looked up at Nick and noticed he had tears in his eyes as well.
“I know I fucked up last night, and Im so sorry. I apologized to Cody over and over again. I never want him to be afraid around me..or be afraid of me. Those pills helped me to conquer my anger. Something I guess I developed when I was playing ball in college when I got a concussion. Im going to do something about it. Im going to get help...For me. I guess I just need to know if you’re going to be there with me…or be there for me…?”
Sabrina noticed one tear fall down Nick’s stoned face expression. Sabrina wiped her tears that had fallen down her cheek.
“You’re probably just saying anything right now, Nick.”
“No. Actually Im not.” Nick said firmly. He continued, “If you don’t want to be with me anymore, I need to know. Give me closure. Because... I won’t come back. I feel like I have done all that I can to make our relationship work…and to make it what I thought you wanted. So…are you done with me?” Nick then began clinching his jaw muscles as he stared at her waiting for a response.
Sabrina hesitated before responding. She ran her fingers thru her hair as she thought for a moment. She had already made her mind up that she was going to leave Nick since he was the father of Joanna’s second baby. She had already decided to move into an apartment. It was time she told him, Sabrina thought.
“Nick…I think we should probably separate for a while. Just give each other space, ya know, to work out our issues.”
“Space? What the hell does that mean?” Nick asked confused and slightly angry as he quickly wiped his teary eyes. “Don’t tell me you want space so you can spend the rest of your time with that guy, Kevin. Just tell me you don’t want to be with me anymore…you don’t have to sugar coat anything, Brin. Just tell me.” Nick pleaded with Sabrina.
“Nick, you’re the one who keeps having babies with Joanna. Maybe it’s Joanna you need to be with.” Sabrina pouted.
Nick chuckled in disbelief.
“Okay…I get it. I got it. You will never get over the fact that I am the father of Joanna's son. I get it. You will forever say you never cheated on me, and never apologize for it. I got it. So, I guess that means, we’re done. Right?” Nick said with sarcasm.
“Yeah…I guess so, Nick. We’re done.” Sabrina said with an attitude when she sensed his sarcasm. She then slightly gasped realizing what she had just said. She didn’t mean for it to come out so harsh. She then added feeling somber, “I’ve already been looking for somewhere else to stay until Cody finishes the school year. Because… when Cody’s school year ends…Im moving back to Atlanta.”
Nick didn’t respond. He felt like a dagger had stuck him right in the heart. He only stared at her with a blank expression. He couldn’t believe she was really done. He figured he might as well be done as well. He sighed quietly.
“Okay.” Nick said almost in a whisper with deep sorrow. “Alright.” He said again as he took a step back.
He inhaled and exhaled loudly as if trying to hold in his emotions. He swung his arms and clapped his hands together as if trying to muster up all of his courage to stay strong. He then cleared his throat and sniffed.
“Okay…I uh…I will go.”
Sabrina saw how uncomfortable he just became. He was so vulnerable and not confident at all. She had never seen him like that before. It was as if he wanted to cry but he felt he needed to be a man and not show his emotions.
Nick slowly turned to leave out. He suddenly stopped and turned around to face Sabrina again.
“I never saw any of my kids born. I always wanted to see my child be born. Will you call me and tell me when you go into labor?” Nick asked as if he were a kid asking for permission to have candy.
Sabrina felt another tear fall down her cheek.
“Yeah…of course.” She responded softly.
“Thanks.” Nick replied softly.
He turned to leave once again. He stopped just before opening the door and turned around to look at Sabrina once again. “Uhhmm…I’ll just wait for you to send me the divorce papers. I’ll sign them when you’re ready for me to.” Nick said sadly and finally walked out of the room.
As soon as Nick left the room, Sabrina immediately broke down into tears, crying.
