Chapter 22
Gainesville Hospital
_
A few days have passed and it was now the weekend. Kelly and
Derek had been staying in a hotel while Derek would take Cody to school every
day. Sabrina always looked at the door
when someone would walk thru thinking Nick would be close behind. However, she
was proven wrong every day.
Nick hadn’t stepped foot back in her hospital room since that day. She had not received a phone call from him or anything. She tried to over look it. It was something she would have to get over since she told him their relationship was over. However, Sabrina’s day did get brighter when she saw her best friend, Raven, walk thru the door that early Friday afternoon. Sabrina and Kelly filled Raven in on everything and she couldn’t believe what all had went down.
“So, where are you going to stay?” Raven asked Sabrina.
Sabrina adjusted herself in the hospital bed that she was so sick of lying in. “I don’t know. We still have to get my things out of Nick’s house.”
Raven chuckled with disbelief. “Nick’s house…how crazy is that. You never looked at that house as your own, huh?”
Sabrina slowly shook her head no.
“Derek said that he was going to call some movers to help get your things out today and put them in a storage.” Kelly added.
“I want to go. I never got to see this house, and I have a few words for Nick.” Raven said as she rolled her neck.
“No, Raven. Please just let it go.” Sabrina begged her friend.
Raven sighed as she looked at her friend laying in bed. “Alright fine. But I still want to see this house. Kelly have you seen it?”
“No.” Kelly said flatly.

_ Nick looked down at his watch and realized it was time for
him to pick up Josslyn. It was his weekend to have her. As Nick left the NICU
from seeing baby Nicky, he thought about Sabrina. She was at the same hospital
as baby Nicky, yet on a different floor. He still had not heard from Sabrina
nor had he even tried to call or visit her in the hospital. As far as he knew,
Sabrina was still in the hospital, but he hadn’t bothered to try and see how
she was doing. He would quickly make his way into the hospital up to the NICU
floor and leave quickly out when he left. Unfortunately, baby Nicky now had an
infection and needed to be treated for the infection. However, he was now
breathing more so on his own. Nick always visited Baby Nicky at any chance he
had.
Nick was leaving the NICU, when he heard Joanna calling after him in the parking lot.
“Hey…wait a second.” Joanna said as she rushed up to him.
Nick stopped and turned toward her. “What’s up?”
“I just wanted to talk to you for a second. You never really talk anymore. To anyone. Miley said that Liam hadn’t even heard from you and you haven’t been to work all week. Are you okay?” Joanna stated as she tightened her ponytail.
“Yeah. Im fine. I've just been in the studio a lot lately.” Nick said nonchalantly as he put his shades on.
“Oh. Well…how are things with you and Sabrina?”
Nick didn’t immediately respond.
Joanna continued, “I mean…I was just wondering since, you know…I had told you the news about her and that guy fooling around.”
“Everything is…everything.” Nick said flatly and turned to walk away.
“Wait.” Joanna said walking after him. “What does that mean?”
“Why do you care?” Nick asked as he continued to walk to his car.
“Because I care about you. You are the father of my kids.”
Nick stopped and looked at her. He believed she already knew because if she spoke to Ariana before, why wouldn’t she have spoken to her now. He was sure that Sabrina’s job knew why she hadn’t been to work all week. And with Ariana being Sabrina’s assistant, Ariana would have told Joanna something…right? Nick thought as he stared at Joanna with suspicion.
“We’re not together anymore.” Nick said with a glum expression.
Joanna gave him an apologetic stare. “Awe…Nick…Im so sorry. Are you okay? Do you need to talk about it?”
“Nope. Joss, is at your mom’s house, right?” Nick said quickly changing the subject.
“Yeah. I’ll come with you to get her.”
“Nah…I think I can face your mom alone to pick up my daughter.” Nick said and started walking away from her toward his car.
Joanna stood there and watched Nick walk away as she began to smirk.
Nick hopped inside his car and his cell phone began to ring.
“Hello?”
“Nick. Hey, it’s Derek. You have a second?”
“Oh hey Derek, what’s up?” Nick responded without any excitement in his voice.
He knew whatever Derek had to say had to be something about Sabrina.
“Are you going to be home in the next 30 min or so? I have called some movers to get the rest of Sabrina’s things.”
“Oh…right. Uhh..yeah, I’ll be there.” Nick said in a monotone voice.
“Alright. Thanks. See you in a bit.”
“Right.” Nick said and ended the call.
Nick decided to go ahead and go back to the house he and Sabrina once lived in. He made a u-turn in the road. He would just have to pick Joss up after they left the house.
Nick was leaving the NICU, when he heard Joanna calling after him in the parking lot.

“Right.” Nick said and ended the call.
Nick decided to go ahead and go back to the house he and Sabrina once lived in. He made a u-turn in the road. He would just have to pick Joss up after they left the house.
_ Nick pulled up in the driveway. He hadn’t been there all
week since the last time he saw Sabrina. The day he left the hospital from
seeing Sabrina, he grabbed all of his clothes and had been staying at his mom’s
house. Nick didn’t want to live in the house or sleep in the bed knowing that
Sabrina was never coming back.
Nick walked into the kitchen and looked at the house as if he had never seen it before. So many memories flooded into his head. He could see Cody sitting at the kitchen table doing his homework. He could see Sabrina laughing and talking to Cody as her growing belly protruded from the tank top she wore.
Nick shut his eyes to block out the memory.
Nick passed their bedroom door. He saw the hole in the wall. The hole he created when he punched it. Nick sighed as he regretted every moment that happened that night. He wished he could rewind and do that whole day over again. Yet, it still wouldn’t erase the fact that Sabrina was with another guy.
Nick walked away from the bedroom and walked toward the living room. He sat on the sofa in silence, waiting for Derek to arrive as he rested his hand on his forehead.
Moments later, Nick heard a truck pull up into the drive way. Nick sat up and looked out the window. He saw Derek and some other guys get out of a truck. He then saw Kelly and Sabrina’s best friend, Raven. Nick took a deep breath preparing for whatever they wanted to say to him. He wasn’t really in the mood to hear what anyone had to say. He just wanted to go get his daughter and go back to the studio to keep his mind clear.
Nick ran his fingers thru his hair and opened the door. He saw Derek walking up to the door first. “How are you holding up?” Derek asked Nick as he gave him a dap handshake.
“Im holding up.”
“Sorry for the caravan I just brought with me. They wanted to see the house.” Derek said with sincerity as he gestured his head to Kelly and Raven.
“It’s okay. I understand.” Nick said solemnly.
At that moment, Kelly and Raven walked up.
“Hi Nick.” Kelly said with a faint smile as she walked inside.
“Hi.” Nick briefly smiled and quickly dropped the smile.
Raven followed close behind. “Nicholas.” Raven greeted him as she narrowed her eyes at him. “Hello, Raven.” Nick said pleasantly without a smile.
Nick saw how Kelly and Raven looked around the house as if it were a museum to them. Nick rubbed the back of his neck feeling severely uncomfortable. He cleared his throat when the movers walked in.
“Her things are in that bedroom right there. Cody’s things are upstairs.” Nick directed them.
The movers went and moved about.
Kelly had folded her arms in front of her chest as she looked around. She then looked back at Nick, saying, “It’s a beautiful house, Nick.”
“Thanks.” Nick said flatly.
Nick saw one of the movers taking a bag of clothing out to the truck. Nick cleared his throat. “So, listen…I am…uh…gonna go. Anything she wants…she can have it. I don’t have a need for anything in this house anymore. Im putting the house up for sale…so…” Nick paused.
“You’re selling the house?” Raven asked in shock.
“Yeah. ...And..her car keys are hanging on the wall in the kitchen.” Nick responded.
“Don’t let us make you leave, Nick.” Kelly said with concern as she noticed the hurt in Nick’s eyes. “No, it’s fine. Really. I have to pick up Josslyn…so…” Nick said. He then appeared to have just ran out of words, so he turned to leave out of the door.
“Nick!” Raven called out to him.
Nick turned around to face Raven and waited for her to continue.
“You’re not even going to ask how she’s doing? Don’t you want to know?” Raven glared at Nick. Nick thought for a moment. “No, not really. But how's the baby doing?”
Raven looked stunned. She then narrowed her eyes at Nick once again. “Ouch, Nick. Ouch.” Raven said sarcastically. “That’s just cold.” Raven added.
Nick looked away and thought for another moment before saying anything else. “Yeah…I guess so.”
Nick turned to leave once again.
As Nick reached his car door, he heard Derek call out to him. Nick stopped and mumbled a curse. He just wanted to leave. However, he waited to see what Derek had to say.
“Hey…you alright man?”
“Yeah.” Nick quickly responded.
“How’s that other thing going? You know…about seeking that help we talked about.”
“Yeah…” Nick said slowly. “Im still working on that. Im just looking for a good place to get help, ya know?” Nick lied.
He had not been looking. He was stalling actually. He knew he needed help, but found it hard to go get the help.
“I hope so, Nick.” Derek said as he looked at him suspiciously. “I hope so. Let me know if there’s anything I can do, alright?”
“Thanks.” Nick said with a faint smile. Nick hopped inside his car and quickly pulled off.
Nick walked into the kitchen and looked at the house as if he had never seen it before. So many memories flooded into his head. He could see Cody sitting at the kitchen table doing his homework. Nick's mom, Sandra's Home
_ Later that night, Nick had given Josslyn a bath and was
putting her to bed in his mother’s guest bedroom.
“Daddy…are you sad?”
Nick chuckled. “Why do you ask?”
“I don’t know. Mommy said you have been sad lately.” Josslyn said as she held on tight to her teddy bear.
“No, my little pumpkin eater. Daddy just has a lot on his mind. I’ll be fine.”
“Good.” Josslyn giggled. “Can we go to the studio tomorrow?”
“Sure.”
“Will Cody be there? Because it’s my turn to play on Mr. Brandon’s small keyboard.”
Nick smiled at the thought.
His smile quickly faded as he thought more about Cody. He had to admit, he missed Cody.
Nick finally responded by forcing a smile on his face. “Nope. It’ll just be me and you.”
“Oh.” Josslyn simply replied.
“Is that okay with you?”
Josslyn smiled and nodded yes. She then nestled her head into the pillow and closed her eyes to go to sleep. “Good night daddy. I love you.”
Nick leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Good night baby girl. I love you too.”
Nick quietly exited her room and walked down stairs where his mother was in the den relaxing on the sofa. Nick plopped down in the chair sitting next to her. He stared at the television. His mother, Sandra, looked over at him.
“Let me guess. More studio time tomorrow?”
“Yep.” Nick simply stated.
“Honey, I will be glad when you get out of this funk that you’re in. Soon, you’ll realize that the two of you breaking it off is what’s best for you.”
Nick didn’t respond. He continued to stare at the television with a stoned face expression.
“How is baby Nicky?”
“He’s hanging in there.” Nick replied dryly.
“That’s my little miracle grandson.” Sandra smiled. Sandra then sat up feeling tired. “Well, honey, I am off to bed. Remember, you haven’t done anything wrong. There are plenty of other beautiful girls out there for you. Sabrina is not the only girl for you. Im sure your father has told you that plenty of times.”
Sandra walked over to Nick to give him a kiss on his cheek. Nick slightly moved away not wanting her to kiss his cheek. She noticed his gestured and kissed his cheek anyway.
“I love you. Good night.”
“G’night.” Nick said flatly as he clenched his jaw muscles.

The next day, Nick and Josslyn spent a lot of time at the studio. Josslyn was busy with Nick’s friend, Brandon's, small keyboard in the recording booth. It gave Nick a lot of time to spend time alone, in his own thoughts.
“Daddy…are you sad?”
Nick chuckled. “Why do you ask?”

Nick & Brandon
_ “Hey yo, Nick! What’s up my dude!” Brandon said as he walked
into the studio with Nick.
Nick looked up from the piano he sat at. “What’s up.” Nick faintly smiled as he gave Brandon a dap handshake.
Brandon looked into the recording booth and saw Josslyn playing on his small keyboard.
“Let me hear a tune baby girl.” Brandon said on a microphone so Josslyn could hear him.
Josslyn smiled big and started slapping her little fingers on the keyboard.
“Ahhh, music to my ears! Keep going, you’re doing an excellent job!” Brandon told Josslyn.
“Thank you Mr. Brandon!” Josslyn giggled cutely.
Brandon took a sip of his drink out of his red cup as he looked over at Nick who appeared to be in deep thoughts.
“Yo, man…you alright?”
Nick looked up as if snapping out of his thoughts. “Yeah. Im good.”
“How’s that song you been working on coming along?”
“It’s not. Im throwing it away.”
“What? Why? It was the best vocals you ever laid down on it. What happened?”
“Im done with it. It’s not really worth it.” Nick said sadly.
“You’re just going to give up on it, huh?”
“Yeah… I guess so. I should be working on other things. For myself.” Nick said thinking about getting help for his drug problem.
Before Brandon had a chance to say anything, there was a knock at the door. Both Nick and Brand turned their attention to the door. In walks Joanna. Josslyn looked up and saw her mother. She banged on the window frantically waving to her mother.
“Hi sweetie!” Joanna smiled broadly as she looked at Josslyn in the recording booth.
“What are you doing here?” Nick asked with a slight frown.
“I came to cheer you up.” Joanna said as she pulled up a chair sitting between Nick and Brandon at the music board filled with hundreds of buttons and knobs.
Joanna looked at Brandon and smiled at him. Brandon only looked at her with a puzzled expression.
“Are you guys, hungry?” Joanna asked as she pulled out some hotdogs from Nick’s favorite hot dog restaurant called Johnny’s Famous Dogs’. They used to eat there almost every other day when they were in college together.
Brandon smiled. “Yo, I will never say no to food. Welcome to the studio pretty lady!” Brandon said as Joanna handed him a hotdog from out of the bag.
She then looked at Nick. “And this is for you. Johnny’s famous scrambled cheese dog with the works…just for you.” Joanna handed Nick the hotdog with a wink and a smile.
Nick chuckled at the thought. He hadn’t had Johhny’s famous hotdog in forever.
“Thanks.” Nick responded as he took the hotdog from her.
“You are so welcome.”
Josslyn rushed around the corner when she saw them eating. “I want a hotdog mommy.”
“Okay, but if you eat…you can’t go back in there.”
“Okay…I will wait ‘til later.” Josslyn said and ran back off inside the recording booth.
“What made you think of this?” Nick asked with a mouth full.
“I was thinking, what would make Nick smile…and of course, it had to be Johnny’s Dogs. Duh!” Joanna laughed.
Nick smiled. “I guess so.”
Joanna smiled back at Nick admiring his brown eyes.
Joanna then snapped out of her inner thoughts and hopped up from her chair. She sashayed her way around to the recording booth where Josslyn was. She wanted to make sure she showed off her ‘new mommy’ curvy figure as she wore her tight jeans. However, Nick wasn’t really paying attention to her. He was too busy eating his hotdog. Brandon on the other hand, watched her every move as he kept his eyes on her butt as she walked. He shook his head thinking naughty things about her as he munched on his hot dog.
Once Joanna was in the recording booth, she picked up some headphones and started to rock out with Josslyn as Josslyn played her little heart out on the small keyboard and sung out loudly. Nick looked up and couldn’t help but laugh at his daughter and her mother. He had to admit, it was a cute Kodak moment between the two.

_After spending an hour there just laughing and chatting it up with both
Nick and Brandon, Joanna started to gather her things together. She
gazed at Nick as he laughed at a joke Brandon had just told. She thought
he looked so handsome as he smiled. She grabbed her purse and stood
up.
She tapped Nick’s arm saying, “Hey… so, I’m about to go up to the hospital and see little Nicky. Do you want to come?”
Nick looked up at her with a grin. He slowly responded. “Yeah.”
Nick rose to his feet and said his goodbyes to Brandon. Nick swooped Josslyn into his arms and started to follow Joanna out of the studio.
“Ay, yo, Nick!” Brandon called out Nick just before he closed the studio door.
Nick kissed Josslyn on her cheek and stopped to turn around and face Brandon awaiting his response.
“How about that song you’ve been working on? Are you sure you don't want me to save it on the track?”
Nick thought for a moment as he looked at Josslyn in his arms. He then looked back at Brandon. “Nah, man. Trash it. No need for it anymore.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, B… Im sure. See ya.”
“Aiight man.” Brandon said as he watched Nick leave out of the studio room.
Part 2
Baby Nicky
_ Baby Nicky has been
home with Joanna over the last month. Nicky was now almost 2 months old. Nick
was still working and had yet to get help for his drug addiction to pain pills.
He felt that he just couldn’t find the time when all he did was work so much.
Nick had been spending a lot of time with Joanna only so he could see baby
Nicky. On his way home from work one night, Nick decided to call Joanna to
check on baby Nicky. He knew she would be up since he didn’t have a regular
sleeping pattern. As soon as Joanna picked up the phone, he could hear baby
Nicky crying on the other end.
“Hello?” Joanna answered sounding frustrated.
“Hey. How’s he doing?”
Joanna sighed with frustration as Nicky continued to cry. “How does it sound like he’s doing? He won’t stop crying.”
“Maybe he’s not feeling good.” Nick said tiredly as he drove.
“I don’t know what’s wrong. Can you go to the store and get more pampers? I need more pampers.” Joanna said loudly over his cries.
“Now?” Nick asked.
“Yes, now! What am I supposed to change him with, the fucking newspaper? Yes, now.” Joanna said as she rolled her eyes.
“Alright. I’ll be there in a minute.” Nick said taking a deep breath and ending the call.
Moments later, Nick knocked on Joanna’s door. Joanna answered the door with Nicky still crying. She opened the door wide so Nick could let himself inside. Nick furrowed his brows when he saw Nicky still crying.
“He hasn’t stopped crying yet?” Nick asked as he closed her door.
“He did stop, but he just started back up again."
Nick placed the pampers down on the table and walked up to Joanna.
“Here…let me hold him.”
Joanna moved away from him as she eyed Nick up and down. “No. You just came from work. You need to wash your hands and take your shirt off. I don’t want him against your clothes.”
Nick looked at her suspiciously. “My shirt? Seriously?”
“Yes.” Joanna said as if she were saying ‘duh.’
Nick unbuttoned his shirt as he walked over toward her kitchen. Joanna smirked when she saw Nick’s muscular shoulders and arms as he took his shirt off exposing his white tank top. It was obvious to her that Nick not only had been spending most of his time at the music studio, but he also had been spending time at the gym. She had been spending some time at the gym herself, to get her figure back. And so far, Joanna thought she was doing a good job. She thought she had caught Nick staring at her butt a couple of times whenever he was around.
Joanna walked into her bedroom and sat on her bed as she held baby Nicky. Nick entered into her room holding his hands out wanting to take Nicky from her. As soon as Joanna handed the baby over to Nick, he slowly stopped crying. Nick walked around Joanna’s bed as he lightly bounced Nicky in his hands holding him against his chest and patting his back.
“Hey champ. What’s wrong buddy? You miss daddy? Huh?” Nick quietly said to Nicky and lightly kissed his head.
Joanna faintly smiled as she looked at Nick. She grabbed her cell phone and secretly took a picture of Nick pacing the floor with Nicky in his arms. Her heart melted when she saw how loving Nick was being a dad. It actually turned her on at the sight.
Nick walked around Joanna’s bed and sat down. He laid Nicky down in front of him still slightly cradling him. Baby Nicky cooed as he looked up at Nick.
Nick smiled down at him. “I still can’t believe his eyes. They are like blue-ish gray. How did that happen?”
Joanna looked over at Nicky. “What…that’s not a big deal. Me and Miley have different eye color. That’s not a big deal.”
“I know. Im just saying.” Nick said without looking at Joanna.
Nick then picked up Nicky, cradling him in his arms and sat back on Joanna’s bed feeling really tired since he just got off from work. It was now 3:15am. Nick rested his head against her headboard of the bed and closed his eyes. For some reason, Sabrina’s face popped into his mind. He still hadn’t talked to her, nor seen her. He didn’t know if she was still in the hospital or not. He hoped she hadn’t had the baby yet. She said she would let him know, and he hoped she would keep her word.
“Nick? Are you sleep?” Nick heard Joanna say softly to him.
For a second he wished it was Sabrina calling out to him. He quickly knocked that thought out of his mind.
“No.” Nick said quietly as he kept his eyes closed.
“Maybe you should stay here for the night. I know you’re tired. I would hate for you to get on the road and fall asleep going back to your mom’s house.”
Nick slowly opened his eyes and looked down at baby Nicky in his arms. He was now sound asleep. Joanna walked around to the other side of her bed where Nick was sitting and gently took Nicky away from him.
“Why don’t you get comfortable, while I put Nicky back in his crib.” Joanna said calmly.
Nick watched Joanna take Nicky over to his crib in the corner of her room. Nick rubbed his face as if to gain some strength from being so tired.
“No…I think I better go home.” Nick said starting to get up from her bed.
Once Joanna placed baby Nicky into his crib, she quickly rushed over to Nick and placed her hands lightly on his chest.
“No, Nick…seriously. Stay.” She slowly backed him up toward her bed.
She made him sit back down on her bed. She bent down and took his shoes off.
“C’mon, Jo, cut it out.” Nick said as he looked down at her.
She smiled up at him. “What? Im not doing anything. Just go to sleep.”
Nick cleared his throat. “Thanks for the offer. Maybe I should sleep on your sofa instead.”
Joanna giggled. “Don’t be silly. Why are you acting like we’ve never slept together?”
“That’s the point…Im not trying to go that route.” Nick said tiredly.
Joanna rolled her eyes. “I promise, alright? I won’t do anything.”
Joanna smirked as she pulled the covers back for Nick to lay in her bed. Nick just stared at her.
“You should probably take your pants off too. You know…so you can be comfortable.” Joanna smiled.
“Nah…Im good. And…I’ll sleep on top of your covers.” Nick said laying back on her bed.
Joanna smiled and walked into her bathroom. In the bathroom she quickly fluffed her hair and took off the t-shirt she was wearing, exposing her black bra. She cupped her breasts pushing them up and together. She took her shorts off exposing her black thong panties. She looked at herself in the mirror and was satisfied by what she saw. She smiled and turned the light off. She then quickly turned the bedroom light off as she stared at Nick laying on her bed with his eyes closed. It was clear that he was tired. But she figured he wouldn’t be too tired when he saw what she had to offer him.
Joanna easily crawled into her bed under the sheets. Just as she started to move closer to him, she heard baby Nicky begin to whine. Joanna rolled her eyes.
“Seriously?” Joanna whispered in anger.
“I got it.” Nick said as he tiredly got up from the bed.
Joanna raised her bed sheets up to her chin and turned to her side watching Nick with the baby. She adored him for doing so…however, she wanted him. Now. She wasn’t going to let him leave without having him, she thought.

Joanna
_ The next morning Nick was lying on his back on top of Joanna’s
bed. Joanna was restless and heard the birds begin to tweet outside her window waking
her up. The sun was slowly peeking over the horizon allowing a little light to
shine into her room. Joanna looked at the clock which read 7:11 am.
Joanna could hear Nick’s heavy monotone breathing as he slept beside her. Joanna raised her head and looked down at what she thought was Nick’s handsome face. She glanced down his body and noticed Nick had an early morning erection that was pitching a tent in his pants. Joanna immediately became excited. She couldn’t help but allow her hands to slide down toward his pelvis and grip his ‘woody’. She immediately moved the covers from around her body and straddled over Nick. She began nibbling and sucking on his neck while unbuckling his pants.
“Brin…” She heard Nick softly gasp as he slowly started to wake up from his sleep.
Joanna abruptly stopped and sat up as she glared down at him.
“Nick!” Joanna said firmly as she furrowed her brows at him.
Nick opened his eyes and saw Joanna straddling over him. “Jo, what the hell?” He quickly moved her off of him and quickly got out of her bed. “What are you doing?” Nick asked with a frown.
“You still want her?! It’s been a month or so, and you’re still thinking about that bitch?”
“What? What the hell are you talking about?”
“You just called me Brin.”
“No I didn’t.” Nick argued.
“Yes the hell you did. My name is Joanna. Get it right, asshole.”
As if on cue, Nicky began crying over in his crib.
Nick rubbed his face still feeling tired and sleepy. Nick grabbed his shoes from the floor and walked out of her bedroom.
“Where are you going?” Joanna asked as she tried to rock Nicky back to sleep.
Nick didn’t respond.
Joanna followed Nick into the living room as she held Nicky in her arms. “Nick?” she saw Nick putting his shirt on.
“I gotta go.”
“Okay, wait. Im sorry. Please…don’t leave. Nick…”
Nick didn’t respond. He continued to put his shoes on.
“Alright fine…we can role play. You can call me whatever you want, just … not her name…” Joanna pleaded as she rocked Nicky.
“You’re crazy, Jo.” Nick said looking for his keys.
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing will ever happen between you and I again. Nothing.” Nick said calmly.
“What do I have to do to get you to love me, Nick? It’s not fair! I am the mother to your kids! That bitch doesn’t want you. I want you!”
Nick stared at Joanna in disbelief. He shook his head and walked over to his keys near the kitchen counter.
“Nick…” Joanna said as she adjusted Nicky in her arms.
“Im sorry, Jo. I can’t …with you.” Nick said as he started to walk toward the door to leave.
“Dammit, Nick…wait! Talk to me. Please.” Joanna begged as she rushed up to him cradling Nicky in her arms.
Nick stopped and looked down at Nicky who appeared to be frowning as he calmed from his crying. He then looked at Joanna who was standing in her bra and thong panties only. Nick thought she looked good standing there holding Nicky, however, he couldn’t be serious with her as long as she was practically standing there half naked.
“Can you go put some clothes on, please?”
Joanna smirked and shoved baby Nicky into his arms.
Nick welcomed Nicky into his arms, allowing Joanna to put some clothes on.
Nick sat down on her sofa as he adjusted Nicky in his arms and lightly kissed his forehead. Joanna quickly rushed back into the living room wearing an oversized t-shirt and shorts. She stopped and looked at Nick, watching him as he cradled Nicky. Joanna eased her way down on the sofa next to Nick as she stared at him.
“Nick, I want us to work. I do…and I’ll do anything to make our family work. Why can’t you see that?”
“No…I see it, Jo. I know you’re trying…but…”
“But what? You can’t possibly still be in love with that... girl. She cheated on you. She told you that she doesn’t want to be with you. I mean, what more do you want?”
“Jo, please. I don’t need you to remind me. I never said I was still in love with her, either.”
“Then what, Nick?” Joanna pleaded into his eyes.
“I’m not trying to be with anyone right now, Jo. I have to get my life in order.”
“Okay…well, let me be there for you. I love you. I would never cheat on you. I never lied to you. I’ll support you.” Joanna said as she gently rubbed his back.
“And I appreciate that. I do. But…I love you as the mother of my kids only.” Nick said softly trying not to hurt her feelings.
Joanna furrowed her brows and removed her hand from his back. “You don’t want to have sex with me anymore? I don’t turn you on anymore? What, are you turning gay or something?”
Nick frowned as if he had just eaten something sour. “What? No!”
“Then fuck me and prove it.” Joanna demanded as she moved closer to him.
Nick chuckled in disbelief of her actions. “Don’t be so pathetic Jo.” Nick then placed Nicky into her arms and stood up. “Im out.”
“Nick, wait…” Joanna pleaded with him as she gently laid Nicky down on the sofa and stood up to meet Nick at the door.
Nick suddenly stopped and turned to look at her. “Which, by the way…you have lied to me.”
Joanna paused with hesitation. She was confused by his statement.
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“You lied and said you never spoke to Ariana. Yet, she comes to you and suddenly gives you all the information about Sabrina cheating on me with some dude she works with? Looks like you talk to her just as much as I do. You would think Ariana would have told me instead of going to you first.” Nick said coldly as he narrowed his eyes at her.
He then yanked the door open saying, “Kiss Joss for me.” He walked out.
Joanna was left dumbfounded as she thought about the words he just said. What did he mean he talked to Ariana? Joanna immediately became furious at the thought that Ariana was speaking to Nick after she warned her not to. “That bitch.” Joanna whispered.

-------------------------------
_ Sabrina woke up feeling discomfort all over her body. She
looked up at the ceiling of the small two bedroom apartment she had been living in
for the last month. Her aunt helped her to find the place that wasn’t far from
Cody’s school. Since the doctor’s orders was for her to not go to work, Sabrina
thought she had been home bound for way too long. She felt the walls were closing
in on her.
The smell of breakfast cooking was seeping into her bedroom from the kitchen. Sabrina swung her swollen feet out of bed and onto the hard wooden floor as she sat up holding her large belly. She was now 28 weeks pregnant, but she felt like she was going to pop. Sabrina looked at the clock her aunt had given her. The time read 7:32 am.
Her aunt had been gone for two weeks since she had to take care of things for her job, but was coming back toward the end of the week. Derek on the other hand had to get back to the military base. Sabrina wished her aunt would have been able to remain there with her until it was time for her to go into labor, but she understood. Sabrina slowly waddled down the small hallway towards Cody’s room.
“Cody?” Sabrina said as she ran her fingers slowly thru her hair to remove it from her face.
Cody came out of the bathroom across from his bedroom scaring Sabrina from behind.
“Yeah, mom?”
Sabrina jumped around to see her son fully dressed, ready for school.
“Hey, I was just checking to make sure you were getting dressed for school.”
“Yep. Im way ahead of you.”
Sabrina smiled.
Cody touched her belly and pressed his head against her belly. “Good morning baby brother.” Cody paused and smiled as he looked up at Sabrina. “I think I heard him say good morning.”
“Well he’s been telling me good morning all morning long. He won’t stop moving.” Sabrina said with a faint smile. She looked down at his feet. “Go put your shoes on.”
“Okay.” Cody simply responded and walked into his bedroom.
Sabrina made her way into the livingroom and the kitchen. There was Kevin cooking breakfast as he wore his shirt and tie. He saw Sabrina come thru the hallway.
“Well, good morning beautiful.” he smiled flashing his dimples.
“Yeah…I don’t think so. I feel awful, so I know I look awful.” Sabrina said as she took a seat down on her sofa.
“Oh, nonsense!” Kevin said with his charming smile.
“You’re late this morning, aren't you? Shouldn’t you be on your way in to work by now?” Sabrina asked rubbing her belly.
“Tis true. Your sofa felt so nice last night, it was hard for me to wake up on time. The job can wait on me…they aren’t going anywhere.” Kevin said as he scrapped the scrambled eggs he made from the pan into a plate.
Kevin would come over and spend the night at times in Sabrina’s temporary apartment in Gainesville. He would sometimes drop Cody off at school whenever rain was in the forecast so he wouldn’t have to walk in the rain. Sabrina wasn’t able to drive since she felt so uncomfortable driving. The fact that Sabrina had preeclampsia, it really made her gain a lot of weight. Yet she admired Kevin for still telling her how beautiful she looked when deep down inside she felt she was way too big and disgusting looking. She thought her hips were wide. Her belly was huge. She felt her breasts were like watermelons, and her hands and feet were constantly swollen.
Kevin continually told her that she was imagining things. Sabrina thought he was just being a nice friend that he was.
Cody came into the kitchen to fix himself a bowl of cereal.
“You don’t want the breakfast I just cooked for you, man?” Kevin asked in disbelief.
“Nah. I rather have cereal.” Cody said flatly as he continued to pour his bowl of cereal. “Cody…that’s not nice.” Sabrina said as she continued to rub her belly, sitting in the living room. “No, it’s okay. More for me.” Kevin smiled.
Sabrina could tell Kevin's smile was sarcastic. She was too weak to even try to reprimand Cody, so she just didn’t say anything.
“Alright…I gotta go to work.” Kevin announced from the kitchen.
“See ya.” Cody said flatly.
Kevin walked over to Sabrina as she sat on the sofa. “If you need anything, give me a call.” He leaned down to give Sabrina a peck on the lips.
Sabrina kissed him back. “Thanks for coming by, Kevin. I really appreciate you.”
“No problem, sexy.” He whispered to Sabrina and kissed her forehead. He walked toward the door and said to Cody as he walked out, “See ya Cody!”
Cody didn’t respond. He continued to eat his bowl of cereal.
Cody turned around to look at Sabrina. “When is aunt Kelly and Derek coming back?”
“Why? You don’t like Kevin?”
Cody turned around and shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t know. Are you going to marry him?” Sabrina frowned. “Nooo. Why would you ask me that? Kevin is just a friend.”
“Oh.” Cody simply stated.
“Hey, come here…come talk to me.” Sabrina said with concern.
“Can I bring my cereal with me?” Cody asked.
“Sure. Just come here and talk to me.”
Cody quietly walked over to her and sat on the chair with his bowl of cereal.
“What’s up? Why are you so…I don’t know…you’ve been acting weird since aunt Kelly and Derek left.”
“I just don’t understand why Kevin is around so much…that’s all.” Cody said with a light shrug in his shoulders without looking up at her.
“Why? Does that bother you?”
“Aunt Kelly said he shouldn’t be around if you and Nick are still together. I thought you and Nick weren’t together anymore? I don’t know…im confused.” Cody said taking another spoonful of his cereal.
It was obvious, Cody had eavesdrop on his great aunt’s conversations when she was here. She was sure aunt Kelly didn’t talk to Cody about this alone.
Sabrina took a deep breath as she thought about Nick. She hadn’t heard from him since their last conversation when she was still in the hospital. She wondered why he hadn’t even called to see how she was doing. As far as he knew, she could still be in the hospital. But apparently he didn’t care.
“Cody, you’re right…Nick and I are no longer together. Kevin and I are just friends. And nothing more. He comes around to help us since aunt Kelly, Raven and Derek can’t be here to help us. We need all the help we can get. Don’t you think so? I thought you liked Kevin?”
“I guess. Whatever makes you happy, mom.” Cody said getting up as he slurped his milk.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I don’t know.” Cody said walking toward the kitchen.
“Cody…talk to me, honey. I want you to be happy too.”
Cody reluctantly walked back toward Sabrina to tell her how he felt. “I just want it to be me and you…and the new baby. And Aunt Kelly, and Derek. I just want things back to normal. I want to go back to Atlanta and go skateboarding with Raven’s nephew, Jermaine. That’s all.” Cody said looking down.
Sabrina felt her heart break.
“Baby, we will. As soon as school is over this year, and as soon as I have the baby, we’re moving back to Atlanta. The baby will be here, and everything will be back to normal. I promise.” Sabrina reached out for him wanting to hug him.
Cody welcomed her embrace.
“Now hurry up, you have to go to school.” Sabrina whispered to him as she hugged him.
Cody rushed off.
It wasn’t long before Cody was out the door and Sabrina was all alone.
Sabrina made it back to her bedroom and dozed back off to sleep after eating. Sabrina had slept the majority of the morning into the afternoon until her cell phone rang. It was 1:45pm. She looked at the caller id and Sabrina immediately felt her heart race. It was Nick.
“Hello?” Sabrina answered slowly.
There was a brief silence. Nick was taken back a little after finally hearing her voice after several weeks. He quietly cleared his throat.
“Hi, Brin.”
Sabrina briefly closed her eyes at hearing Nick’s voice for after so long.
“Hi.” She responded softly.
“How are you doing?”
Sabrina cleared her throat and sat up in her bed. “Im fine.”
A brief silence.
“Really?” Nick asked softly.
“Yes…really.”
“Well that’s good. How’s the baby?”
“Fine.” Sabrina responded with a cold shoulder.
“Are you still in the hospital?”
Sabrina flipped her hair and slightly rolled her eyes. If he had called her often, he would already know the answer to his own question. Sabrina sighed with a slight annoyance.
“No. But if you called…you would know that already.” Sabrina could hear Nick take a deep breath. “I think the phone works both ways, Brin.”
“Whatever. What can I help you with?” Sabrina asked with a slight attitude wondering why he called.
There was a brief silence on the other end.
“I was just thinking about you and wanted to know how you and the baby were holding up. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t have the baby already or something.”
“No, Nick. I haven’t had the baby yet.” Sabrina said with an attitude.
“Okay. Great. Well…Im sorry to have bothered you. Take care.” Nick said noticing her attitude.
He quickly ended the call before Sabrina could say anything else.
Sabrina brought the phone away from her ear and looked at it with a confused expression. He just hung up in her face. Why? Sabrina tossed her phone across her bed in annoyance. What was his problem? Wait…what was my problem? Sabrina thought. Sabrina slouched down in her bed and closed her eyes. She wasn’t going to stress over him. So she refused to think anything more about Nick. She suddenly shot her eyes open. ‘Wait…he is not about to get away with hanging up in my face.’ Sabrina thought to herself as she reached for her cell phone. She quickly dialed his phone back.
Before Nick was able to say hello, Sabrina barked into the phone, “Why did you just hang up in my face? What is your problem?”
“What? I didn’t hang up in your face—“
“Yes you did!”
“No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did, Nick.”
“I know I didn’t, but okay, fine, Brin. Im sorry, alright? And I don’t have a problem. It’s you with the fucking attitude.”
“Oh really, Nick? You just up and call me out of the blue to get me upset and then you hang up on me like a you’re a fucking 2 year old? Don’t call me or even try to come around if you’re still on drugs because it sounds like you are!”
Nick was taken back by her actions and words. He had no clue why she was so angry at him.
“Whoa…wait a minute? Why are you coming at me like that?”
“Coming at you like what, Nick? You’re probably living life freely, taking your drugs, fucking any girl you want, while I sit here in pain everyday, watching the the walls close in on me and be miserable.” Sabrina began to tear up as her voice became shaky. “And it’s all your fault. I hate you Nick!” Sabrina began to sob feeling all of her emotions boils over.
Nick sat there on the other end of the phone hanging his head low as he listened to her cry. He knew that there wouldn't be anything he could say that would make things better. Although, he wished he could hold her right at that moment.
Nick took a deep breath, not sure what to say. Sabrina listened to his silence as she attempted to regain her composure.
She sniffed and wiped her nose with her sleeve. “Figures…you have nothing to say…”
“What do you want me to say? What do you want me to do?” Nick said in a low deep soft tone. “Figures…you’re so fucking clueless.” Sabrina said in anger as she rolled her eyes and wiped her tears.
“Yeah. I guess I am, Brin. Im sorry.” Nick started to end the call, but he just remembered how Sabrina didn’t appreciate him hanging up on her. So he remained on the phone and listened to her cry.
Within the next minute, her end went silent. Sabrina had ended the call by hanging up in his face.

Nick's Mom Home
_ Nick slowly dropped the phone down from his ear and stared
down at his feet as he sat in his mom’s guest bedroom. He realized that he really screwed up
Sabrina’s life. She was clearly miserable. Nick looked over at the pills he had
gotten from Ariana just last week. ‘I have to do better.’ Nick thought to
himself. He grabbed the pills and walked into the bathroom. He flushed the
toilet and poured the pills into the toilet. He then trashed the pill bottle
into the small trash can. He raised his cell phone up in his hand and dialed a
number. He leaned against the sink in the bathroom, waiting for his call to be
answered.
“Hello?”
“Dad….”
“Hey son.”
“Does that offer still stand?”
“Of course, son. Are you sure about this?”
“Yeah.” Nick said slowly as he looked down at his feet.
“What about Joss and Nicky?”
“Im going to miss them…but I have to get myself straight, dad. My life is out of control and I need help.”
“Good for you, son. I’ll call the doctor and let him know that you’re coming. I’ll send you a ticket to fly you here in D.C.” Keanu, Nick’s father paused. He then continued, “It’s going to be hard son…but I know you can do it. I love you, son. I’ll see you hopefully tomorrow.”
“I love you too, dad.” Nick ended the call and walked out of the bathroom to see his mother standing near his bed.
“So…you’re going to go to D. C. to live with your father…?”
Nick didn’t mean for his mother to hear his conversation. He wanted to tell her after he was already gone.
“What about your job? Is he getting you a job in D.C or something?” she asked with a slight pout.
“I uhm…Im quitting my job here. I have enough money saved up where I can live life a little….until I go job hunting again.”
Sandra, Nick’s mother took a deep breath and sat on the bed.
“Nicholas…honey, what are you doing? You’re just going to leave your kids here?”
“Mom, Im coming back. It’s not like im staying up there. Trust me…I’ll be fine.” Nick said as he walked passed his mother.
“What about Sabrina?”
“What about her?” Nick said nonchalantly as he started to pack some clothing. “Nicholas…honey…Im worried about you. You never tell me anything. What is it that your father can do, that I can’t help do for you?”
Nick stopped and looked at his mother’s worried face. He walked over to her and hugged her. He faintly smiled. “You’re worried over nothing. I’ll be gone for a month or so. I’ll be fine. I promise.” Nick said not wanting his mother know that he was addicted to pain pills and going to D.C. only so he could go to the rehab treatment center.
“You never tell me anything, Nicholas.” Sandra said slightly upset.
Nick pulled away from her and chuckled. “I love you, mom.”
She playfully hit his arm. “I love you too, honey. Don’t go up there letting your father corrupt your mind. He’s already corrupted your mind for 29 years. Don’t get any worse…” Sandra’s voice trailed off as she walked out of the bedroom leaving Nick behind.
Nick lightly laughed as his mom continued to rant as she walked down the hall.

Joanna's Home & Nick
_ The next day, Nick had his bags packed and ready to go to
the airport. He stopped by Joanna’s apartment first so he could say goodbye to his
kids. Nick was stunned when Josslyn opened the door wide with a big smile on
her face.
“Daddy!!” Josslyn shouted as she practically jumped into his arms. “Hey pumpkin eater! What are you doing answering the door?” Nick asked as he hugged her and then gave her many kisses on both sides of her cheeks.
Josslyn giggled. “Mommy is changing Nicky’s diapers. Guess what? I held him three times today!” Josslyn clapped her hands with a cheerful joy.
“No way!” Nick exaggerated with happiness.
“Yes way!”
Nick laughed as he gently lowered Josslyn down to the floor.
As if on cue, Joanna appeared from the hall into the living room. She was surprised to see Nick standing in her living room.
“What are you doing here?”
“I just needed to talk to you for a second.” Nick responded.
Joanna smiled. “You changed your mind about yesterday and the things we talked about?”
“No.” Nick answered flatly.
Joanna immediately dropped the smile on her face. “Then what?”
“Where’s Nicky?”
“Napping. I just put him to sleep.”
Nick looked at Josslyn who had suddenly dropped to the floor allowing the television to catch her attention.
“Joss, come here, baby.” Nick said holding his hand out for her to come to him.
Josslyn hopped up and walked over toward Nick while she kept her eyes on the television. Nick sat on the sofa. Joanna kept her eyes on Nick while she sat on the other end of the sofa.
“What’s wrong?” Joanna asked curiously.
Nick sat Josslyn in his lap. “I am going to D.C. for a month or so. I have some things to take care of.”
Josslyn snapped her head to look at Nick allowing her hair to flick into his face. “Daddy, you’re leaving me here?” her cute face frowned.
“Well, mommy will be here to take care of you.” Nick said to Josslyn and then brought his attention over to Joanna.
“For what?” Joanna simply asked.
“Im going to hang out with my dad for a while. Trust me, it is very critical that I go.”
Josslyn wrapped her arm around Nick’s neck. “Im gonna miss you daddy. Come back soon, okay?” She then kissed his cheek and went back to sit on the floor and watch television.
Nick chuckled.
Joanna remained expressionless as she stared at him. “Does this have anything to do with... Sabrina?”
“No.” Nick quickly responded. He continued, “I just have to get some things taken care of. I’ll be back.”
“So it’s like your mini vacation, huh?”
“Yep.” Nick nodded as he looked at her. He then stood up taking a deep breath. “I should go. My flight leaves soon. I want to give Nicky a kiss before I go.”
Joanna stood up as well. “Okay.” She simply responded.
She followed Nick to her bedroom where Nicky was laying in his crib. Joanna leaned against wall watching Nick take the moment to say his goodbyes to baby Nicky. When he was done, he turned to look at Joanna. Joanna blocked his way to exit the bedroom. She looked up at him with her puppy dog brown eyes. “Just 5 minutes. Give me five minutes.”
Nick stared down at her.
She lowered her eyes down to his full lips and further down to his chest. She looked at his silver chain around his neck and the way it shined against the black shirt he wore. She looked back up to his eyes and thought how handsome he looked as he wore his black baseball cap low around his eyes. She licked her lips and finally spoke.
“Im sorry about yesterday. Im sorry that I love you so much and you obviously, don’t have the same feelings for me. I just thought you would feel differently when im the mother of your two kids, ya know?”
Nick stuffed his hands into his blue jeans pockets not sure what to say.
“I’m just hoping you can give me some closure…? Please?”
Nick looked around the room and then finally rested his eyes down to hers. “Okay. What do you need me to do or say?”
“Kiss me.”
Nick smacked his teeth and slightly rolled his eyes.
“Please? It’s been so long…that I can’t even remember how our last kiss was. So…please…just one last kiss?”
Nick stepped back and rubbed his face briefly taking his hat off to rub his fingers thru his hair. Just a kiss? He thought to himself. ‘What the hell’, Nick thought. …’it’s not like I have anything to lose’. Nick quickly placed his hat back onto his head and lowered it low around his eyes. He slowly stepped up to Joanna, grabbed her face and lightly kissed her lips.
Joanna wrapped her arms around his neck and took advantage of the kiss by pulling him closer into her. Joanna could feel him pulling away, however she didn’t want to let him go. She intensified the kiss by deepening it.
Nick finally pushed her away. “Jo…” Nick said slightly annoyed.
“See…don’t you miss me?”
Nick wiped his lips and looked away from her. “I should go. I’ll see you in a month or so.”
Nick walked away from her not wanting her to say anything else. Joanna slowly followed behind him as she licked her lips still tasting his lips on hers. She wanted more, but she knew Nick wasn’t going to have it. Nick gave Josslyn his hugs and kisses making her laugh and left out of the door.
As Nick drove to the airport, he thought about calling Sabrina, but felt she probably would not have wanted to hear from him. He decided to not call her.
Hours later, Nick arrived in Washington D.C. His father was being comical and decided to hold up a sign that read: Nicholas Lancaster? Your Chariot Awaits You.

Nick's Dad
_Nick smiled and chuckled at his father.
Keanu smiled broadly when he saw his son. He thought he looked just like him when he was younger. He approached him with a huge tight bear hug.
“Look at you! Damn you look good, son! Just like your old man back in the day.” Keanu said proudly.
Nick laughed. “Hey pops. You’re looking pretty good yourself for an old man.”
Keanu laughed wrapping his arm around Nick’s shoulder. “C’mon. Let’s go get something to eat!”
